I love the classical nose of spice, berries and herbs of the 2016 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza, a textbook ultra-classical Rioja that matured in used American oak barrels for 24 months, during which time it was racked by gravity every six months. These wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and a soft vinification without much extraction of long macerations. It's expressive, polished and very pleasant, really what I expect in this style, with some developed notes and a gentle mouthfeel. 100,000 bottles produced. Very good introduction to a classical Crianza at a very attractive price. It was bottled in April 2021. (LG)

The 2016 Rioja “Crianza” from Señorío Peciña is a fairly ripe wine, coming in at 14.5 percent octane in this vintage, but is impeccably balanced in the classic style of this excellent estate. The bouquet hops from the glass in a complex blend of raspberries, spiced meats, cloves, fresh nutmeg, a lovely base of soil, cigar wrapper and coconutty American oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and classy, with a lovely core of ripe fruit, excellent soil signature and grip, suave, buried tannins, tangy acids and excellent balance on the long and complex finish. This is already delicious, but a bit of bottle age to further soften up its backend tannins will pay dividends. An outstanding Crianza!

Slightly funky in style, but I don't mind that in the context of this savoury, well-balanced red from Pedro Peciña and Alberto Ortiz. Tempranillo-based with 5% Garnacha and Graciano, it has sweet, scented American oak, spicy raspberry and goji berry fruit and a fresh, focused finish.

I love a well made, well priced, American oaked, traditional style Rioja, and this delicious bottle of Señorío de P. Peciña checks all the boxes. Classic red cherries, red apple skins, spicy plums, savory dried herbs, dried dill, and soft coconut. Tasty, expressive, poised, and a nice structure. ¡Salud!

This wine does everything that you want a classic Rioja to do. You pop the cork, and it hits you immediately. This is an oaky, earthy, leathery, spicy Rioja. It smells so good! There is so much depth and complexity to this wine aromatically. You could, and I did, take over a minute teasing apart this wine's aromatics. I love wines that make me engage with them, this is one of those wines. What makes this wine even better is the taste. This is a fantastic red wine. The fruit is ripe, there is concentration, and it does that neat trick of somehow changing the fruit tones on the palate, as well as the direction of the wine. This is a very straight forward red, it is built linearly like most Cabernet based wines, and the fruit is that classic dark cherry Tempranillo fruit. However, on the mid palate the wine changes subtly, the fruit darkens, becoming more plum and berries, and the wine broadens and somehow feels deeper too. However, on the finish it brightens up again, it focuses more on those red fruits and speaks to the limestone rich clay soils of the region. This is not a straightforward wine, but it is not overly complicated either. It is delicious and complex. It delivers the spice, the leather, the oak and that old-world earthiness but the fruit is ripe, pure and persisting. It is hard not to get fired up about Rioja when enjoying a wine like this.

I really cannot think of the last time when I had a Pecina Rioja that I didn't like or thought was merely ok. This newest release is full of black raspberry and cherry fruit. There are scents of cedar and dried herbs. It is clean and rather tart on the palate, initially and with a bit of air, fleshes out nicely with richer red fruits, rye seed, dried orange peel and tobacco. Nicely rich with a long, more classically styled finish that is clean and tart. The absolute best of both world styles!

Notes

Along with the likes of Lopez de Heredia, La Rioja Alta, and some others, Señorío de P. Peciña is one of the standard bearers for traditionally styled Rioja. With a very satisfying, dense, mouthfilling textural frame; bright, toasty red fruits, warm earth and wet tobacco, all reveal themselves in beautiful harmony in this great example of classic Crianza from the excellent 2009 vintage. This is delicious now, and has many years of positive evolution ahead of it. The folks at Peciña are steadfast in maintaining traditional Rioja winemaking practices, pointing out that along with La Rioja Alta, Lopez de Heredia, and a few others, they are the only bodega who continues to carefully age and rack all their wines by hand. That fact combined with their excellent quality vineyards in San Vicente and Labastida makes for consistently satisfying, delicious wines.
