2019 Handley "Estate" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
96
Wine Enthusiast
Review Date: 10/2022This intense wine from the cool “deep end” of Anderson Valley spills over with dark cherries, forest floor, subtle toasted oak and fruit concentration. It shows the classic Anderson Valley savory notes from rhubarb and bay leaf to black tea. Full bodied and moderately tannic, it will drink best from 2027. (JG)

Today we have a pure, effusively aromatic, and silky Pinot Noir from Handley Estate. This esteemed property in the "deep end" of Anderson Valley has long been known and respected for helping put the region on the world map for cool-climate Pinot Noir. Planted by the late Milla Handley, a pioneering founder of the region, in the early 1980s, these 40-year-old, mature vines put forth the perfect combination of deep red cherry fruit, hints of brambly black raspberry, and earthy spices. Coastal redwood grove sous bois tones given a firm sense of place to the generous and soft, silky fruit. So expressive right now, leaping out of the glass from the very first swirl. Forward and audacious, but with great poise and balance to match. Not to be confused with the regular Anderson Valley AVA bottling, this is the real deal, Estate Vineyard bottling that typically sells for double our Insider's Advantage price being offered today. This is a one-time price not to be missed. Enjoy this benchmark Anderson Valley beauty for the next 5-10 years. Cheers!

Email CarloAromas of raspberries, strawberries, red apple skins, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Refreshing acidity on the palate, with flavors of cola, leather, a touch of pine, and dried spices on the long finish. A well balanced, classic Pinot Noir from Anderson Valley. Cheers!

Email AlexThe 2019 Handley Estate Anderson Valley Pinot Noir maintains its balance as a luxuriously soft and rounded wine that doesn't feel needlessly bombastic or boozy. Creamy red cherries and juicy, ripe strawberries are immediately inviting on the nose alongside a touch of toasty oak spice, but dig a bit deeper and hints of the Mendocino forest start to peek through. The palate is immensely inviting, with all those soft red fruits enticing you from sip to sip. Oak spice, forest floor, and cherry all carry through the perfectly pleasant finish. This is a bottle that is sure to drain itself soon after opening: it's just that tasty.
