The outstanding 2022 Hermitage Blanc Cuvée Emilie blends 97% Marsanne with 3% Roussanne. All grapes come from two tiny parcels in the Maison Blanche lieu-dit. Punchy honeysuckle, struck match, lemon peel, ripe pear and white peach aromas all blossom in this expressive 2022. Traces of pineapple lend a tropical touch. Opulent and round, this is a rockstar Hermitage Blanc. (NG)

Quince, honeyed melon, toasted bread, and a kiss of stone minerality all emerge from the 2022 Hermitage Cuvée Emilie Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant wine offering terrific purity, as well as length. It's not massively concentrated yet has a balanced, classic style that should evolve and drink nicely over the coming decade.

This stunner of a white is what I yearn for in Marsanne based wines from the Northern Rhone. Layers of peach, nectarine, marzipan and pain grille may seem like a hedonistic cobbler of sorts but Marsanne, never gives you all things at once. It likes to dole out its fruit subtly while keeping you firmly engaged. I recommend decanting for an hour or so before serving now. I did that before our public tasting of our New Rhone Arrivals recently. I was well rewarded for my efforts and this became one of the big standouts in the tasting.

Notes

The Desmeures family of Domaine des Remizières are fourth-generation winemakers who originally sold grapes to the local cooperative. After completing their winery in 1974, the family began production at their new property. The estate is now managed by Phillipe Desmeures, his daughter Émilie and son Christophe. They have expanded to 30 hectares with vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. Émilie now oversees the winemaking, with her brother Christophe tending to the vineyards. We were excited to add them to our lineup of Direct Imports last year, especially once Jeb Dunnuck proclaimed in Wine Advocate, "This estate needs to be on every reader’s short list." The Hermitage Blanc is 100% Marsanne planted in the Maison Blanche lieu-dit over clay-limestone soils. It is barrel-fermented and aged in barrique (about 60% new) for close to a year.
