The 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Christophe should easily be outstanding. It's made in a slightly more modern style, with some new oak, but it has a classic vibe in its smoky darker fruits and peppery, meaty aromatics. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated, with building tannins, it's going to 2-3 years of bottle age and will evolve nicely over the following decade.

The 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Christophe uses fruit from up to 70-year-old vines. Ripe tannins provide good structure to this medium-bodied 2022 that has the clear edge over the 2021. Fragrant black cherry, blackcurrant and blackberry aromatics paired with hints of clove and earth are all nicely delineated. Supple and expressive, the 2022 culminates in a juicy finish. (NG)

The Cuvee Christophe has consistently been one of my favorite wines from this estate. Most of the fruit comes from their holdings in Larnage, a village just to the north of the hill of Hermitage where there is a special calcareous soil called Kaolin. Calcareous soils are not common in this area, so these vineyards are some of the most desirable in the Crozes appellation. The soil provides more structure and texture giving you saturated black fruit flavors of cherry, roasted plum and currants. There are sweet spices from some barrel aging that compliments the underlying tobacco and thyme notes. This is lustrous Crozes that always takes well to a few extra years in bottle. It is still damn good now, though!

This insanely affordable Crozes Hermitage has the best cassis and blackberry flavors. Add light chalk, clean oak, white pepper, wood smoke. The finish is lingering with extracted red and black fruits. Just yummy! I've always appreciated this wine from Remizieres.

Notes

The Desmeures family of Domaine des Remizières are fourth-generation winemakers who originally sold grapes to the local cooperative. After completing their winery in 1974, the family began production at their new property. The estate is now managed by Phillipe Desmeures, his daughter Emilie and son Christophe. They have expanded to 30 hectares with vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. Emilie now oversees the winemaking, with her brother Christophe tending to the vineyards. The Cuvée Christophe is 100% Syrah from the predominantly limestone based soils in their holdings. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in large oak tanks and the wine is aged in a mix of new and used oak barrels. It is full bodied and inky in profile, deep and weighty on the palate and it has incredible, earthy depth and classic smoky pepper notes to round out its deep cassis fruit. Although this varietal can sometimes present a rather tannic front, Domaine des Remizières does an excellent job here, integrating and managing the tannin perfectly.
