As a result of an ongoing dispute with the INAO—who contend that part of the Droin family's historic parcel of Les Clos, named as such on the cadastre and always labeled accordingly, is in fact Valmur—the domaine's Clos is appearing this year as the 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Hommage à Louis. Exhibiting aromas of fresh orchard fruit, peach, honeycomb, toasted nuts and bee pollen, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a seamless, multidimensional profile and a long, expansive finish. Here too the fresh, cool and restrained nose is largely dominated by notes of smoky mineral reduction, acacia blossom, citrus rind and soft wood. There is excellent intensity to the admirably pure middleweight plus flavors that exude an inviting salinity on the detailed and hugely long finish that also displays a hint of bitter lemon character. This is also mouthcoating and dense and a wine that should reward extended keeping.

Clear middling colour, with some generosity of white fruit, perhaps a little oak. The proper intensity of limestone bench Les Clos emerges, linear, with a fine backbone, good grip, and a little sweetness to the fruit.

The 2023 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru Hommage à Louis has the best bouquet amongst the Grand Crus from Droin. Very vibrant and intense, with crushed limestone and flint. The palate is well balanced with melon, grapefruit, orange rind and quince on the entry, building nicely towards a slightly oily-textured finish. I can see this aging well in bottle - more complexity on the finish compared to say, the Valmur or Grenouilles. (NM)

Notes

Producer notes from William Kelley for Wine Advocate: "One of the reference points for the region, Benoît Droin's immensely dependable wines are among the most consistent in the region. As I've written before, to my palate, the combination of Diam closures and élevages employing recently used and indeed occasionally new wood (though only up to 10%) means that these wines need a few years in bottle to show their best. But everything invariably comes together to impressive effect, and the wines age very gracefully indeed. Farming is conventional at this 26-hectare domaine, but the soils are cultivated mechanically and chemical treatments are kept to a minimum. Harvest is early and is partially mechanized, followed by fermentation and élevage in stainless steel and wood, with the proportions varying according to the cuvée. The 2020s from Droin are charming, classically proportioned wines that will offer broad and pleasurable drinking windows." 97/2022)
