The 2020 Bagual Vineyard Cariñena Garnacha Monastrell comes from plants that have been worked with regenerative farming with grower-partner the Solar family in transition now for three years, and it's the first vineyard in Chile (three in Bagual) to receive Ecological Outcome Verification™ (EOV™) from the Savory Institute. It has 13.8% alcohol with a pH of 3.25 and 6.75 grams of acidity. Despite the moderate alcohol, I found the imprint of rusticity from 2020, the earthiness and the ripeness sensation, but as I often saw in many wines, the palate showed better, so it could be a transitional moment for the nose. The wine is medium-bodied with fine-grained, granite tannins and with purity of flavors and a long finish. (LG)

Vinous

Review Date: 03/2023
The 2020 Cariñena - Garnacha - Monastrell Bagual Vineyard - Lot 116 hails from Caliboro, Maule, and was aged for 2 winters in used barrels. Purple in hue. The intense nose presents notes of sweet and sour cherry and cotton candy over a mild layer of oak and red fruit jam. Dry, juicy and vibrant in the mouth. The finely grained, polished tannins and heightened acidity conspire to produce a throat-tickling feel. A lingering, fruity red.

From the Caliboro zone in the heart of the Maule Valley's dry secano, this blend is based on six barrels of garnacha, four barrels of cariñena, and a barrel of monastrell—a Mediterranean blend that was aged for about 20 months in barrels, all used oak. An intense red with herbal and floral aromas and delicious red fruit. The palate has wild tannins, but it also has a fruity background that offers a flavorful balance for a wine that's ideal with grilled chorizo.

Rich blackberries and baked sweet cherries with some raspberry jam and spices. Full-bodied and flavorful on the palate with tight, sinewy tannins. Very ripe, but still quite fresh tasting. (ZS)

I just love the wines from Garage Wine Company. From the funny name to the not funny taste. This Lot 116 has red cassis, black cherries and a nicely chalky finish. As always, an extremely solid and reliable red wine that is both interesting and unique.

Notes

Garage Wine Co. was founded in 2001 by Derek Mossman Knapp, Pilar Miranda, and oenologist Dr. Alvaro Peña. Originally from Toronto, Knapp moved to Chile in the late 1990s—initially for a skiing trip—but stayed after meeting his wife, Pilar Miranda, and discovering the potential of the country's old-growth vineyards. Garage Wine Co. began as a literal "garage" hobby to make small-batch wines for family and friends. It has since grown into a mid-sized artisanal winery into a respected producer of small-batch, terroir-driven wines from the Maule Valley and other regions of southern Chile. The winery works closely with local growers to revive old, dry-farmed vineyards using traditional “originario” methods such as hand cultivation and ploughing with horses, and they ferment all their wines with indigenous yeasts in a hands-on, minimal-intervention style. One of its standout sites is the Bagual Vineyard in Caliboro, a parcel on the banks of the Perquilauquen River with rare alluvial and granitic soils that give the fruit distinctive cool-climate energy and depth. At Bagual, ancient vines of Garnacha, Carignan, and Mataró (Monastrell) are farmed by hand and often with horse work, yielding very limited lots of richly textured, earthy red wines. These wines are celebrated for their plum and berry flavors, spicy and floral notes, fine tannins, balanced acidity, and a savory, vibrant finish that speaks to the vineyard’s unique terroir.
