More expressive and complex than many 2020 Châteauneufs at this early stage, with Provençal herbs and bay leaf aromas to the blackberry fruit - very promising. Light- to medium-bodied, fluid and juicy, with fresh acidity, this is well-defined and should build some complexity in time. Finishes on a savoury note. (MW)

A seductive nose of dark cherries, plums, dark chocolate, dried herbs and sweet spices, follow through to a medium to full body with chewy tannins. Structured with a creamy core of fruit and a compact finish.

Hints of vanilla mark the nose of Benedetti's 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape, joining hints of spice, violets and ripe cherries. A blend based on 75% Grenache and aged in 20% new oak barrels (the rest is in a variety of other vessels), this is full-bodied and nicely concentrated, showing admirable intensity and length along with supple tannins. A voluptuous red, up front and generous, with a lot to like. Reveals cherry and potpourri notes woven with smoldering wild herbs on an open-knit palate. Gains balance and shape from subtly bitter tannins, with a note of bitter chocolate at the end. (KB)

A lot has happened at the Benedetti domaine since my last visit. Christian Benedetti, the father, has resumed control of the estate—but all of the core practices remain unchanged. It was Christian, after all, who first converted the vineyards to organic farming back in 2000. These are still superstar wines, and one of the key reasons we wanted to work directly with him. One of the clear standouts this time was the 2020 Benedetti Châteauneuf-du-Pape. I’ve gone back to the well on this wine several times—it’s just that good. Now on our third offering, it’s remarkable how a couple of extra years in bottle have allowed the wine to relax and fully express itself. Aromas of cherry and blackberry unfold in layers, framed by spice and potpourri. On the palate, it’s delightfully lush yet balanced, with lively acidity and fine tannins that keep everything in perfect symmetry. Entry-level Châteauneuf-du-Pape has quickly crept into the $50+ range, but because this is a direct import—and Christian was kind enough to sharpen the pencil on his margins—we’re thrilled to offer this gem for under $30. It’s rare to find Châteauneuf of this caliber at such a price, and once you taste it, we think you’ll agree—it won’t be around for long.

A lovely (and lively!) CNP bargain! From its nose of rounded dark red fruits and blackberries to its mouthful of black cherries, cedar wood and light herbal goodness. A nice mouthfeel with mellow tannin and chocolate cream. Very, very tasty.

Notes

Domaine Benedetti was founded in 1930 when Nicolas Benedetti emigrated from Italy to Chateauneuf-du-Pape and purchased land in his new region. Nicolas was followed by his son Noel and Noel's son, Christian. Christian was the first owner of the estate to stop selling wine to the cooperative and began bottling and selling his own wines. In 2000, the Domaine transitioned to organic farming and over the years has slowly expanded their holdings from just over a hectare each in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côte du Rhône, to four hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and ten hectares of Côtes du Rhône vineyards. In 2004, Christian's son, Nicolas, joined the domaine after studying oenology and is now overseeing all the winemaking. And finally, in 2021, we struck up a relationship with the Domaine and happily added them to our Direct Import portfolio. This Châteauneuf is composed of primarily Grenache with about 15% Syrah and 5% each of Cinsault and Mourvedre. All parcels are vinified separately and only native yeasts are used for fermentation. Elevage takes place in a mix of new, first- and second-use barrels, plus a small amount of stainless steel tanks.
