2021 Per Se "Inseparable" Malbec Gualtallary
95
Vinous
Review Date: 06/2023The 2021 Malbec Inseparable, from El Monasterio in Gualtallary, Uco Valley, spent a winter in concrete vats. Purple in color. The enticing primary nose presents crushed plum, cherry, violets and faint lavender undertones. The tea-like palate has a juicy, refreshing, taut flow that delivers alluring fruity and floral flavors before the lengthy finish. The 2021 is an oxymoron in a glass: a delicate, nuanced, but raw, high-altitude wine.

PerSe is a boutique project located in the Gualtallary. It was started by two of the most renowned and respected viticulturalist and winemakers after they had spent decades understanding the terroir of Mendoza. They chose to work only in the Northwest corner of the region, one of the highest and coolest parts of Mendoza at 1500 meters elevation. Here the climate is more like Champagne than Napa Valley. The soil is a unique blend of sand, river stones and limestone. The terroir and minimally intrusive winemaking make their Malbecs some of the most sought after and unique expressions in Argentina. The Inseparable is a single parcel wine, that is planted adject to a monastery. Here the soil is a mix of gravel, sand, and limestone. The grapes are hand harvested and then destemmed. Fermentation and aging takes place in 3000L cement tanks. One of the most exciting moments of my review of Argentina wines is tasting the wines from Per Se, the personal project of David Bonomi (Norton) and Edgardo "Edy" del Popolo (Dominio del Plata). I've been following these wines since the very beginning and have seen them develop and grow to become some of the best wines produced in the country...Keep your eyes peeled for news or availability of the wines from this top name in Argentina...quantities remain so painfully tiny that the wines are practically unobtainable." -Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate
