Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve is softer and more upfront compared to the Black Label, offering a terrific perfume of cassis and black raspberry fruits supported by spicy oak and violets. It too is perfectly balanced, has full-bodied richness, and tons of character. Drink bottles anytime over the coming 15 years.

Int'l Wine Review

The 2021 Turnbull Oakville Reserve is composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon along with a dash of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot which was sourced from Leopoldina (61%) and Fortuna (39%). It instantly begins to impress as it opens to alluring aromatics of ripe black currants, cassis and blueberries which come together with spices, graphite, dried herbs and spring florals that all develop beautifully in the glass. On the palate this possesses a full body, with a gorgeous voluptuous texture, supported by nicely integrated, well-polished tannins. It shows wonderful overall balance, structure and concentration through the long supple finish. While this is showing marvelous now, it should continue to offer drinking pleasure for years to come.

The Wine Independent

The 2021 Oakville Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of blackberry preserves, blackcurrant pastilles, and candied violets pop from the glass, followed by hints of dark chocolate and star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate is soft, bright, and lively, finishing with pure black berry notes and a real skip in its step.

Vinous

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve is fabulous. Once again, the Reserve is one of the most stellar wines in the range. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, leather and mocha build nicely as this juicy, exuberant Cabernet shows off its alluring personality. This is one of the best Napa Valley Cabernets readers can find at this price point. Superb.

Turnbull's Oakville Reserve Cab is a showcase of why Oakville Cab has become so renowned the world over. If you like pure luxury and explosive fruit in your glass of Cabernet Oakville is the absolute pinnacle. Turnbull has not one, not two, but three unbelievable estate vineyards in Oakville. The winery home block sits right across HWY 29, a literal stones throw, from the iconic To Kalon Vineyard. Fortuna Vineyard sits in a prime spot on the eastern edge of the valley floor right next door to Rudd Estate, Plumpjack, Bond - St Eden and many other famed vineyards. Leopoldina Vineyard is high in the hills looking down on the valley below. Neighbors include Dalla Valle, Ramey - Pedregal, Joseph Phelps - Bacchus, and Peter Michael - Au Paradis. The soils here are radically different from the valley floor with huge boulders of volcanic rock strewn throughout the vines and deep red, iron rich soils. Much of the vineyard is so steep and rocky, everything is done by hand, vine by vine. Winemaker Peter Heitz weaves dozens of micro-vinified lots together from each of these vineyards to create a truly special and emphatic expression of decadent Oakville Cabernet. The wine is super aromatic with bold, ripe red berry fruits, olallieberry, black raspberry, blackberry and walnut preserve, new leather, crushed rock, baking spice. The tannins are plush and fine, immediately approachable despite a muscular core of structure under the exuberant fruit. Wow, this is a seriously pleasure packed expression of Cabernet with layer upon layer of luxurious ripe fruit. The finish holds on to more of that iron-rich crushed rock, and graphite minerality that I presume must come from the large Leopoldina component. Incredible wine from incredible vineyards.

Notes

The 2021 Oakville Reserve Cab is composed from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot. The fruit is from two of Turnbull's estate vineyards Leopoldina and Fortuna.
