This wine is classic and elegant in style, with tangy red fruit and supple tannins that are well-integrated. A touch of acidity throughout keeps it fresh within a context of subtle power and concentration, with highlights of cedar, dried herb and violets providing savory and aromatic grace.

Winemaker Chris Phelps made a stunning 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Sleeping Lady Vineyard. It’s all Cabernet Sauvignon that was harvested on October 5 (pre-fire) and spent 18 months in 70% new French oak. It has a beautiful blue fruit quality as well as hints of wild strawberries, violets, and Asian spices, with a slightly lifted, exotic edge. As with the 2016, it’s beautifully balanced, elegant, and nicely concerted. Give bottles 3-4 years and it should evolve for 15-20 years or more.

Deep garnet with a hint of purple, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon comes bounding out with notes of blackberry pie, fruitcake, chocolate mint, potpourri, and unsmoked cigars plus a touch of dusty earth. Full-bodied, rich, and seductive, the palate is plush, with a lively backbone and opulent finish. (LPB)

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Sleeping Lady Vineyard captures all of the natural richness of the year. Succulent red cherry, plum, mocha, spice and licorice all develop in the glass, but the 2017 is, more than anything else, a wine of volume, textural intensity and darkness. The tannins are a bit coarse, but that is a signature of a year in which severe heat caused some blocking of phenolic maturation. (AG)

The 2017 vintage sometimes gets overlooked being sandwiched in between the powerhouse 2016 wines and the focused, long-lived wines of 2018. However, I've recently had the opportunity to taste several 2017 Napa Cabs and have been really impressed at how well they're aging and thought them to be drinking very well right now, perhaps even more expressive than the vintages on either side. The 2017 Ad Vivum was harvested just days before the wildfires broke out, Chris' relatively early picking decisions averting disaster. The wine is wonderful with dark, dusty fruits of the forest, blackcurrant, mulberry, leather, graphite, cedar pencil. A nice soft array of fruit underpinned by some good structural tannins and rocky mineral notes. It’s good to go anytime over the next 10 to 15 years with ease.
