Aromas of dark cherries, wild berries, dried thyme, bay leaves and peppercorns. It’s medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Layered, round and juicy with a spicy edge and a vibrant, flavorful finish with excellent length. 100% grenache noir. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

All Grenache, all matured in demi-muids, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape les Larmes Papales features attractive notions of menthol, crushed stone, pencil shavings and blackberries on the nose. It's full-bodied, supple, succulent and juicy. Framed by softly dusty tannins, it picks up a hint of black olives on the long, savory finish. (JC)

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Larmes Papales is all Grenache and comes from the west part of the La Crau lieu-dit. Brought up in demi-muids, it has an exotic perfume of ripe strawberries, red plums, rose petals, and spring flowers. Just incredibly floral and perfumed, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, silky tannins, and outstanding length. This Burgundian, finesse-driven, balanced 2020 is perfect for enjoying any time over the coming decade or so.

The new vintage of the Larmes Papales is exquisite. This pure expression of Grenache is nearly boundless. Showing the finesse and concentration of the 2020 vintage, the wine has an explosive nose of raspberry, strawberry compote and cherries jubilee, while the palate shows layers of fruit, baking spice, tobacco and bay leaf. The texture is silky on the palate, with balancing acidity and a nearly weightless feel. What a triumph from one of our favorite Direct Import producers!

One of the best CNP's that I have tasted so far this year. A dry beginning with tart and dry tannins. With a bit of air, dark red cherries and red cassis flavors flesh out. There is a nice minerality to balance the juiciness. The finish is long and lingering.

Notes

Domaine Benedetti was founded in 1930 when Nicolas Benedetti emigrated from Italy to Chateauneuf-du-Pape and purchased land in his new region. Nicolas was followed by his son Noel and Noel's son, Christian. Christian was the first owner of the estate to stop selling wine to the cooperative and began bottling and selling his own wines. In 2000, the Domaine transitioned to organic farming and over the years has slowly expanded their holdings from just over a hectare each in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côte du Rhône, to four hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and ten hectares of Côtes du Rhône vineyards. In 2004, Christian's son, Nicolas, joined the domaine after studying oenology and is now overseeing all the winemaking. And finally, in 2021, we struck up a relationship with the Domaine and happily added them to our Direct Import portfolio. The Larmes Papales is 100% Grenache from old vines from the western part of the "La Crau" lieu-dit.
