The wine shows both elegance and great richness. It is a poised and ripe wine, full of impressive black fruits and generous tannins. The fine structure gives considerable potential for the long term. (RV)

Tasted alongside the other two Barton wines – Mauvesin and Langoa – this seeks to outshine with a nose of dark and curranty fruits, slate, liquorice, tar and a touch of green peppercorn. And outshine it does. This dark but lifted sense of composed concentration is translated in precise fashion onto the palate, which is packed out with dark and polished fruits, showing density but also drive and tension, beneath which there hides a firm but imposing grip. This is full of energy and very impressive, and is clearly set for the long haul. An absolutely top notch example of the château’s style which does everything my palate desires.

The flagship from this great château, the 2020 Château Léoville Barton checks in as 85.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14.5% Merlot that saw 60% new French oak. It has fabulous aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, liquid violets, spring flowers, and background oak. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, its purity of fruit is just about off the chart, it has a great mid-palate, and enough tannins to warrant 7-8 years of bottle age. This is another sensational wine from this team that will have 30-40 years of overall longevity. (JD) 97+

Aromas of dark berries, ash, tar, blackcurrants and lead pencil, following through to a medium to full body, with firm and integrated tannins and a medium, chewy finish. Needs four to six years to soften and come together. Very tight and nicely structured.

Notes

95-98 points Ian d'Agata, Terroir Sense: "There can be no doubt that 2020 is an outstanding vintage for Château Léoville Barton. Inky-ruby. Brooding, massive wine that combines aromas and flavours of roasted plum, framboise, blackberry, minerals, espresso, and oak-derived spices. Big, full-bodied and extremely powerful, this displays great intensity and sappiness of fruit while managing to convey an air of refinement. Really chewy with a ton of extract, but with plenty of ripe underlying fruit that outdistances the firm, massive but noble tannins. Closes very long with a savory quality and boatloads of energy and focus." (06/2021)
