The purity of fruit is really something here, with blackcurrants and blackberries, together with orange, stone and granite character. Mind-boggling in many ways. Full-bodied with very fine tannins that are polished and pure. Such a fine texture. Lots of primary fruit. Like picking wonderfully ripe grapes. Great length. One for the cellar.

The Grand Vin 2020 Domaine De Chevalier ratchets everything up another notch and will be one of the legendary wines from this address. Notes of pure cassis, graphite, lead pencil, and scorched earth define its incredible aromatics, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is pure, classic, regal Pessac-Léognan is as good as anything in the vintage. Give bottles 4-6 years and it will evolve for 50, 60, 70+ years. I absolutely love this wine. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. (JD) 98+

This impressively rich wine is centered on great swathes of black fruits. The tannins, with their stylish swagger, are a fine complement to the fruit, giving the wine structure and the potential for elegant aging. (RV)

Blueberry and blackcurrant fruit on the nose, touches of ripeness and freshness. juicy and lively, but straight and tense too, with such liquorice and tobacco and chocolate bitter spices. It's quite constricted and focused right now. Generous but not necessarily charming on the palate. Precision and clarity is there no doubt, this has been well made and it has that mature ripe fruit aspect that gives a wide mouthfeel with lots of tension and direction. Super young but super promising. Rich, heady, a touch high alcohol on the finish though. 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend. (GH)

For a high-upside, collectible value Bordeaux, Domaine de Chevalier is usually a go-to name in the conversation. This 2020 is a case in point, and perhaps one of the best ever from the estate. There is a richness and texture to it, but the purity and freshness of the fruit is what really shines through. Deep red to black fruit flavors surround a core of gravelly minerality, a thirst-quenching wine that leaves you coming back for more. I've had the fortune to taste it a few times this year, and each time was left impressed by how rewarding and drinkable it is even an this extremely young stage. That said, in a cool cellar this will evolve beautifully for the years to come. I'm excited to continue to revisit this one as it evolves, and at our going rate, it's not too tough to get a few bottles to do so. Congrats to the team at Domaine de Chevalier for this brilliant achievement.

What an incredible bottle of Bordeaux! While this wine is dark and has an explosive nose of cassis and clean Pessac gravel, it remains very elegant in the mouth. This is the trick that only the best vineyards can perform, richness without heaviness, power with grace- balance. If you love Bordeaux, this is a great bottle to put in the cellar!

While this showed really nicely this morning when we opened it, several hours later it's just magnificent. The nose is super plush with raspberry, blackberry, black cherry, and of course a lovely wisp of cassis running through the whole thing. Complementing the fruit is a little green peppercorn, some barrel spices, and a line of minerality in the back. The fruit is dark first, with a brambley core, and an inky tobacco and leather note coming out, showing the first signs of age starting to touch the wine. Don't get me wrong, it has a long way to go and will lay down for years and years to come, but there's a little tertiary just starting to show its pretty little face. The finish is lengthy and a touch savory, ending mostly with a little bit of barrel spice. This is top tier wine, from a top tier producer at a mid-tier price. This wine is most deserving of a fat potato with a nice ribeye and a sufficient green. You owe it to yourself.

Notes

95 points Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier has a refined and understated nose, well-defined with blackberry, briar, gravel and earth. Sensual in style, it gradually unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins and a little creaminess toward the back end, but there is still decent structure here. Give this four to five years in bottle—the class shines through." (11/2024)
