The Vergers de La Moriniere, the farm the makes Hubert Calvados, represents the true heart and soul of apple brandy production. Family owned and operated for 5 generations, they're commmitted to doing it the old way. The right way. They own 50 hectares of fruit trees with over 45 varieties of apples. They plant mostly bitter sweet and bitter varietals which are especially good for making great calvados. The generation is led by Astrid Hubert, who we first visited in 2013. Her deft hand and attention to detail makes for exceptionally vibrant and lifted style of calvados, but don't be fooled, this cask strength single barrel packs a bunch. It's just outrageous that we're able to sell 30 year old cask strength single barrel Calvados for less than $100. It takes nearly 30 years for the trees that made this brandy to start producing commercially viable amounts of fruit and another 30+ years of careful attention to this brandy to achieve what we consider to be an absolutely quintessential expression of raw unadulterated calvados. There are almost not products available in this style in the market and the few that come close are 3 to 4 times the price - arguably not even as good. Astrid picked this incredible cask for us and bottled it without reduction, you'll rarely find a more complete and complex brandy in any category.
