2022 Laberinto "Arcillas" Pais Maule Valley
95

Review Date: 04/2024In a blind tasting, I'd be tempted to identify this as a top Mencía from Bierzo or Ribeira Sacra in Spain. Fermented and aged in concrete and amphoras, this has blood orange and red cherry fruit, succulent tannins, floral intensity, sappy acidity and none of the rusticity that can detract fom many examples of País in Chile. 2024-30

Notes
Rafael Tirado owns one of Chile's truly original properties in the tiny, high-elevation section of Maule Valley called Colbún. Some of the vines are literally planted in a "laberinto" (labyrinth) formation, which in Rafael's words would force him and anyone else working the vineyard to slow down and think!
