Rich and deep in colour, this is inky damson, layered and luscious in its aromatics, both restrained and generous, performing the limestone magic trick of push and pull, giving and taking. Blackberry, blueberry and liqourice upfront, with tannins that bristling and muscular but well honed and discreet. As it softens through the mid palate, the creamy fruits arrive, and you relax for a moment before the limestone grip is turned on again. This will close up soon, as the 2016 has done, but right now is singing with liqourice, black chocolate, blackcurrant, turmeric, spiced black truffles, mandarin peel and slate. Totally lives up to its En Primeur brilliance. 50% new oak. Part of the oustanding vintages series within this vertical.

Lots of roses and dark fruit, such as blackberries and brambleberries on the nose. Full-bodied, yet tight and poised, with real focus and firmness and seamless tannins that run the length of the wine. Minerality and persistence in a cool way. This is very serious for the vintage and for the cellar.

A blend of 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Pavie Macquin is deep garnet-purple in color. It bursts with expressive blackberries, boysenberries, and ripe plum scents plus hints of dried mint, cast-iron pan and wood smoke. Full-bodied, rich and powerful in the mouth, it has amazing tension and velvety tannins, finishing very long. (LPB) 97+

Gorgeous ripe aromatic blackcurrants on the nose. Seriously expressive with sweet touches of milk chocolate - an element of Black Forest gateau to this. Direct and linear on the palate, focussed and precise but with excellent clarity and minerality. You get the blood iron, wet stone slate in both flavour and texture on the tongue against the high toned cherry and redcurrant fruit. Lots of energy here, it's almost holding back from being fully expressive. Great potential and lovely finish with chocolate, minty freshness and liquorice spice. (GH)

Pavie Macquin is crafting some of the Right Bank’s finest wines these days, making the most of their small but enviable parcel on the outskirts of St-Émilion. This recent release comes direct from Bordeaux at the best in-stock price on the market, making it one of the most rewarding buys you’ll find for a wine of this pedigree. Like many 2019s, it’s both accessible and bold, but I see tremendous upside—it’s easy to imagine this feeling like a ridiculous deal in hindsight. Deeply fruited but never heavy, aromatic and structured, it opens with fresh, layered blackberry and plum that drive to a brighter red fruit core, finishing long and mineral-tinged. The refinement they’ve developed in recent years is fully on display, adding a new dimension to the wine. One of those “I would’ve paid more” type finds—produced in limited quantities—this is a serious, dynamic Bordeaux that’s going to be irresistible in the years to come.
