Many think of the Rums produced in the French Caribbean as the cane-juice-based product known as "Rum Agricole." However, the vast majority of the Rum distilled at these special distilleries is actually made from molasses. The stringent regulations on Agricole restrict production to certain seasons and quantities. Distillers in these regions spend the rest of the year making more standard Rums. A percentage of those molasses-based Rums are fermented longer, in order to to produce a more intense and powerfully flavored blending Rhum. The legendary "Grande Arôme" Rhum from the Distillerie de Savanna in Saint-André is produced from 100% molasses and fermented for at least ten days. This is of the first Rhum from Reunion to ever make it stateside, and the only Grande Arôme we've had the privilege of selling. Expect a heady, bombastic style that falls nicely between the intense esters of a Jamaican pot-still rum and a high hogo Agricole. Tasting notes from the bottler: "Strawberry, black cherry, licorice, and pickled tomatillo on a faintly herbal, umami-rich palate of overripe pineapple, salted grapefruit, and toffee with candied tomato and sweet cream on a long fruity finish." Bottled without sugar, coloring, chill-filtration or any other additives at 115 proof.
