2007 Zind-Humbrecht "Clos St. Urbain - Rangen de Thann" Pinot Gris Alsace Grand Cru
95
Wine Spectator
Review Date: 09/2009Deeply colored, exhibiting a panoply of aromas and flavors, including jasmine, honeysuckle, dried apricot, dried orange peel, smoke, mineral and mushroom, with hints of clove and myrrh. This is set on a solid framework, with vibrant acidity to balance the richness, offering more with each sip. The long finish alternates between the pretty floral and fruit notes and hints of smoky forest floor. (AN)

(15.2% alcohol, 22.5 g/l r.s. and 4 grams acidity) Pale yellow-gold. Musky yellow fruits, smoke, flint and dried meat on the very ripe, slightly aggressive nose. Lush, fat, sweet and full; a powerful, outsized wine with just enough firming acidity. Chewy but not phenolic on the finish. This should absorb some of its sweetness with extended aging. Humbrecht noted that this wine has more noble rot than the 2007 Rangen riesling, but much less than recent vintages of this bottling. (ST) 91+

Very rich gold color. Complex nose with strong earthy minerality and spice prevailing against a backdrop of subtle ripe stone fruit. Full-bodied and dry. Crisp acidity, richly textured with fairly warm balanced alcohol and packed with a medley of ripe tropical fruit and appealing savory earthy notes. Very long, rich finish. (WE)

Very complex nose with real lift and depth. Lots of mineral influence here. Then satin smooth and flattering on the palate. Tingles with life. Caressing texture but definitely a 3 in terms of richness. Wait for this to unfurl and show its complexity. 18.5/20 points (JR)
