The finest wine I've tasted from this estate, the 2020 Château Bellefont-Belcier is an incredibly gorgeous blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby/purple-hued, it offers a great nose of cassis, ripe black cherries, camphor, dried flowers, cedar, and forest floor. Bringing gorgeous richness, it nevertheless stays flawlessly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins and a great finish. The purity of fruit here is just about off the charts.

Fascinating aromas of plums, peaches, lavender, violets, and other flowers. Hints of fresh herbs, too. So complex. Full-bodied yet so elegant and polished with a curated and focused palate. Hints of chocolate at the end. It’s so subtle and complex. Weightless on the palate.

Crushed herb and tobacco leaf along with red berry fruit enchant. Very pure and fresh, indeed gaining in coolness, with more cool blue fruit than either the 2018 or 2019, even if the alcohol level is the same. 30% new oak for ageing, plus 20% in ovoid wooden vats of 40-hectolitres, accentuating fruit purity. 'Our most precise vintage so far,' winemaking director, Jean-Christophe Meyrou, told me two years ago when tasting from barrel. It shines from bottle, but needs a few more years to enter a proper drinking window. (PK)

The steady restoration of Bellefont-Belcier to a classified St Emilion worth following continues with this vintage, and it is packed with dark cherry fruits, pomegranate, crayon, tobacco and saffron. Jean-Christophe Meyrou director, Jerome Aguirre as winemaker. 37hl/h yield. Upscore from En Primeur. 3.65ph, 30% new oak, 20% large oak casks with the rest in neutral barrels, with no added sulphur during fermentation, vinification in concrete tanks, harvest Sepmteber 15 to October 9.

It's a joy to see Bellefont Belcier in the hands of the team responsible for elevating Tour St-Christophe to one of the region's great buys in just a few years. It is also fun imagining them taking this gem to the next level in the same way. They might have done just that with this 2020. Leading with fine and engaging aromas that are lined with plum and bright florals, the palate shows a noteworthy sense of refinement that speaks beautifully to the masterful touch at this estate. On the palate there's a clear depth of red-to-black fruit, fine tannins, and a long, impressive finish. The 2020 shows the grace and character that this property can exhibit in top vintages, but the depth here is at another level. It'll be all too easy to pull corks early and it is well worth checking in on at this stage, but this is a wine that will keep adding complexity over the next few decades with ease. A singular value in modern Bordeaux, this is one that should line the cellars while available at this kind of pricing, but it still provides an elevated experience even at this young age.

This phenomenal release from Bellefont-Belcier has a super fragrant red-fruited nose with lavender, licorice and light cedar spice. On the palate, seamless ripe boysenberry, dark cherry, elegant tannins and anise. A real winner that is surprisingly drinkable right off the bat. It will age beautifully, of course. This one is on my not-to-miss list and my highest rated Bordeaux of the past few weeks.
