2022 Mas de Libian "Bout d'Zan" Côtes-du-Rhône

2022 Mas de Libian "Bout d'Zan" Côtes-du-Rhône

Notes

The Thibon family acquired the Libian property in 1670, and in 1970 Jean-Pierre Thibon decided to wholly focus on wine production. Since then the estate has grown to 25 hectares of vineyards and 8 hectares of "nourishing" land planted to olive trees, vegetable and flower gardens, and grains to support the organic and biodynamic viticulture. Mas de Libian began its biodynamic farming in 2005 and was shortly certified by Demeter afterwards. The "Bout d'Zan" translates to "blame it of Zan," which playfully uses Jean-Pierre's childhood nickname referring to his small frame and tanned skin. It is a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah grown on clay-limestone soils. All grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation is powered by native yeasts and the wine ages for 9 months in large oak barrels. Full of bright red fruit flavors, this is fresh and inviting and the perfect introduction to this exciting producer. *Biodynamic* John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "steady red robe; the nose is circular, cherry fruit with a licorice hint, good lift. The palate gives a clear stream of black cherry fruit, a touch of blackberry, and accumulates a little late depth, nicely and roundly. It’s alert, sympa, has purity and a little structure-tannin in support, the length nice." (02/2023)
