2020 Famille Ravoire "Pierre de Fontval" Cairanne

Rich dense nose; lovely ripe red fruit on the bouquet and palate, with spice, coffee bean, vanilla and some leathery characters coming through. Smooth, expansive and mouthfilling with ripe fruit. The tannins are equally ripe, supple, and polished; good concentration and freshness too. Long, peppery finish. (2022 DWWA)

The wines of Cairanne are finally getting the recognition they deserve, and their rise has been remarkable to watch. Once a humble Côtes du Rhône Village, Cairanne was elevated to Cru status in 2016, joining Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and it has quickly become one of the most exciting appellations in the southern Rhône. That promise was confirmed when the Fontval earned a Gold Medal at Decanter’s 2022 World Wine Awards. We first brought this wine in two years ago and were fortunate to receive one final release from the winery—which is great because it’s drinking even better. The soils here—limestone pebbles, sand, and clay—lend natural finesse to the tannins, and the wines show both power and elegance. The Fontval is a true classic, with a vibrant nose of strawberry jam and redcurrants, followed by violet pastilles, anise, tobacco, and spice on the palate. Generous yet silky, with just the right pop of acidity, it’s hard to imagine a better value for your weeknight rotation.

Absolute steal at this price! Nose gives lush spice notes and stone. The palate on opening was focused and astringent, opening to rich plum. Don't miss it!

Another value from Rhône AOC Cairanne! Mushroom and cinnamon come through on the nose, followed by plummy fruit and spice on the palate, with grippy tannins through the finish. This is a bombastic red, but food-friendly and well-priced, making it an easy choice for a weeknight.
