The flagship 2019 Château Léoville Poyferré is based on 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot. It's one of the bigger, richer wines in the vintage and has a gorgeous, thrilling, full-bodied style as well as notes of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, violets, and chocolate. While many estates seem to be playing it safe and focusing on so-called elegance and balance, I love that Poyferré continues to make a ripe, sexy, beautifully textured wine that always offers more opulence and sexiness than most in the vintage. Ranking with the crème de la crème of the vintage, this gorgeous Poyferré can be enjoyed any time over the coming 40-50 years. Bravo!

Of the three Léovilles this one has the lowest percentage of Cabernet, with 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, partnered by 27% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. The élevage made use of 80% new barrels, and 20% second-fill. Aromatically it is dark and focused, smoky and concentrated, yet there is evidently a fresh perfume here too, with scents of blackcurrant, damson, crushed chalk and lavender. It feels evocative and expressive, modern and yet fresh. This is followed by brilliant poise on the palate, bright, with a richly polished substance, evocative and ripe, with substantial tannins. A real grand vin here, with super poise and imposing substance, an intense powerhouse of a wine. This should evolve brilliantly.

Powerful, seductive, sexy and balanced, this has tension right from the start, coiled textured tannins that have grip, salinity and vibrancy. Creamy damson, blackberry and smoked vanilla pod expand through the mid palate.

3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc add extra subtlety to this classy St-Julien. On the nose there are pronounced exotic characters with Asian spice and cedar wood, combining with plump dark plum fruit and juicy blackberry. More sweetness evident on the palate than many other Haut-Médoc wines, with a mouthfeel that has great balance and purity. Will drink well at a (relatively) young age. (AH)

This is one of my secret weapons in collectible Bordeaux—a world-class experience at an all-too-reasonable price. I firmly believe it captures the brilliance of Left Bank Cabernet that defines the 2019 vintage, while benefiting from the attractive pricing that makes 2019 one of the best buying opportunities in Bordeaux. Though still primary at this stage, it’s accessible, dynamic, and immediately delicious. Perfectly balanced, with deep cassis, fine minerality, and incredible texture, this is a wine of real substance and depth. From the aromas to the mid-palate to the long finish, it moves seamlessly from one nuance to the next. I can’t wait to see how it ages, but even now, it has so much to offer. I can easily imagine it going toe-to-toe with the estate’s benchmark releases from 2009 and 2010—but for the moment, it remains one of their best-kept secrets. Don’t miss it.

The 2019 Bordeaux, as a whole are quite scary! Scary because they are relatively drinkable right out of the bottle! This gorgeous Leoville Poyferre has round black fruited nose with background baking spices and flowers. It is richly beautiful with purple fruits and heady cassis. Milk chocolate with cinnamon spice. Generous but, not too heavy. Pretty much a wowza!

Notes

97 points Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré is creamy, racy and voluptuous to the core. Bright red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and menthol fill out the layers with effortless grace. In some tastings, the 2019 has come across as quite powerful, while in other moments it shows greater finesse. Either way, the 2019 is positively stunning. I very much admire its energy and persistence." (02/2022)
