I don't know quite how we made this one happen, but sometimes the timing is right. There's no tricks or caveats here, just good old KY and Indian bourbon blended in tiny batches that should likely garner significantly higher price point without issue, but in today’s market, doesn't command the prices that were originally envisioned. Add to that the sudden change in distribution, a very unusual thing for a bottler that has had the same distribution channels for many many years, and K&L starts to assume a position of significant power in the negotiations for the final stocks in California of this lovely bourbon. The first batch of OMWFTBH (LOL) was highly allocated and sold everywhere for close to $200. Without our knowledge the second batch came in and no one seemed to be aware of its presence eventually resulting in the product being closed out for about $40 less than original wholesale. You'll find many stores jumped on board at the $150 price point. But when I saw the deal, I decided to push the envelope and thank god I did because they went for it!!! Now we're sitting on the last stocks in CA of Batch 2 at $70 below the previous close out and over $100 below the original price. At this price, its damn tasty bourbon tbh. Let's go!!! The color is auburn. The initial nose is full of super classic notes - vanilla extract, burnt sugar, sweet tea, peach puree, butter cream, sweet corn, and subtle baking spice. It's ultra bourbon-y! With some air you start to get added complexity - fresh espresso roast, honey candies and pulverized cacao powder. On the palate, it's very rounded and medium bodied without big harsh tannins you might get from less well selected older bourbons, but also no grain-y youthful notes. It's not super heavy or light either offering a down the middle easy drinking character with plenty of character and spice to keep it interesting. Notes of peach again here, big vanilla, sweet oak, building toward a sweet baking spice finish and a linger clove-y note. I'm not surprised this didn't sell well at $200, it doesn't have the power and intensity that most super high-end bourbon drinkers are looking for. But when you want excellent older bourbon that's still got a kick, but is easily to love, this is an easy slam dunk at $80 a bottle. Don't be mad when it’s sold out though. This is the last of this batch and it would be very unusual if they ever got close to this price again.

Notes

Old Man Winter From the Black Hills is just about the longest name for any bourbon out there and the history of the brand is nearly as long. Founded many decades ago by Allied Lomar, the owners of modern day Preservation Distillery, the brand was only sold in Japan until recently. It was sourced originally from the Old Commonwealth Distillery via Julian Van Winkle's bottling operation before moving to Bardstown and working closely with the Willett family to source and bottle old bourbon and rye. Old Man Winter has now been revitalized as a yearly release from Preservation's oldest stocks. This marriage of bourbon whiskies from Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee was hand-selected and blended in tiny batches of 3-5 barrels. Tennessee bourbon may infact not be included in this particular batch as the back label is unclear as to the actual source, but states prominently KY - IN and no obvious TN character is present in this particular bottling. It was bottled at a wonderful 109.8 proof and offering everything you want in a well-matured bourbon, there's no question that this stuff is excellent quality. The orignal MSRP of nearly $200 likely reflects the age, rarity and re-acquisition cost of similarly barrels, but our price reflects a one time only deal due to a distribution change rather than any question about the quality of these stocks. There's no doubt that at $100+ off suggested retail, there's simply no better time to buy this great looking, great tasting bourbon.
