The 2015 Louis Roederer Cristal is composed this year from a cépages of sixty percent pinot noir and forty percent chardonnay, with twenty-five percent of the vins clairs raised in oak barrels. As is customary, the still wines do not go through malolactic fermentation for Cristal and the wine was finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter in this vintage, after aging nearly seven years sur lattes. It delivers a beautifully refined aromatic constellation of apple, nectarine, a superbly complex base of chalky minerality, a touch of raw almond, pâtissière, white flowers and a very, very discreet hint of oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and utterly seamless in its perfect balance, with a marvelous core, superb soil signature and grip, zesty acids and a very, very long, focused and complex finish. 2015 is a riper year in Champagne and this seems to have dovetailed brilliantly with the classic Cristal style of mineral signature, precise fruit tones and great structural integrity. This is destined to be a great, great classic vintage of Cristal!

From vineyards that are run organically, this iconic Champagne's latest iteration is as beautiful as ever. Textured, with a mineral undertow, the wine is just beginning to soften and show a balanced maturity. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

Int'l Wine Review

The 2015 'Cristal' is utterly sublime. It impresses with its captivating bouquet of vibrant lemon, ripe apricot and ginger, interlaced with delicate notes of honey blossoms and hints of mineral. The initial freshness gives way to a subtle complexity, where toasted brioche adds a layer of warmth and depth. The palate is richly textured with a fine and persistent mousse, enhancing the gorgeous interplay of citrus brightness and sweet, floral nuances. It continues to impress with its remarkable refinement and chiseled frame that lead into a sophisticated and multidimensional finish. Overall, this is a simply marvelous vintage that should age fantastic and offer years of drinking pleasure. (JD)

For the warm and dry vintage this has tremendous freshness and elegance. The complex nose of citrus blossom, mint, lemon and lime zest opens up slowly as this aerates in the glass. The wine’s ample structure is still quite firm, which is a vintage characteristic, the mousse very fine but also very lively for an eight-year-old champagne. Cristal fans will love this as it is, but a year or two more in the bottle will do a lot for the very long mineral finish of this youthful masterpiece. A cuvee of 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, picked from all 45 Cristal vineyard plots. (SP)

Cinnamon and I were invited to the pre-release party for this great wine at sushi Kusakabe in SF. We drank it with chef Mitsunori Kusakabe’s Hokkaido scallop and sea urchin, his Bluefin fatty tuna roll, his Unagi Shirayaki and a fantastic fish broth umami soup with Kyoto red miso. It was magical. The wine showed extraordinary purity, as Jean Baptiste Lecaillon, the chefe de cave of Roederer, had explained that he had pushed for as much freshness as he could in this warm vintage. The nose had perfect baguette toast, which developed into hazelnuts and nougat with air. This wine is clean, light and airy in the mouth… And far too easy to drink. The finish is saline and mineral and really tells the tale of the chalk on which it was grown.

Notes

The 2015 Louis Roederer “Cristal” Brut Champagne is composed of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay and is treated to 25% fermentation in oak. It did not undergo any malolactic fermentation and was dosed at 7 grams per liter. It is principally from Verzenay, Verzy, Beaumont-sur-Vesle and Aÿ for the Pinot Noir and Avize, Mesnil and Cramant for the Chardonnay. Jean-Baptiste explained that the heat of 2015 was strong, but the trick for Cristal was to pick late nevertheless - they started on the 7th of September and finished on the 20th. Some wines from 2015 come across as green because the flavor maturity did not come as fast as the sugar maturity, and he couldn’t let that happen with Cristal. -Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer
