This chardonnay driven champagne delivers the creaminess and beautiful toast that only long ageing on the lees and generous reserve wine additions can give. I love this for the aperitif, it is generous, but still finishes dry and fresh. This property is one of the few to only use their own selections in the vineyard, and they never buy cloned plants from the nursery. This lends the wine a lovely complexity without sacrificing ease of drinking. This is an unbelievable deal in fine champagne, at a price point that is becoming rarer and rarer to find in todays wine market. Don't miss this one!

This Premier Cru bottling from Petiau shows just how much quality you can get from lesser-known producers. It leans heavily on Chardonnay, and you can feel that lift right away—bright citrus, white peach, and a soft touch of almond on the nose. It’s clean, focused, and driven by chalky minerality, but there’s also this round, creamy mid-palate that gives it great texture without being rich. The bubbles are tight, and the finish is long and super refreshing. It’s elegant but not flashy—perfect for someone who wants a Champagne with quiet confidence.

Look, I know I have a lot of favorites, that's just the nature of the beast being exposed to so many wines. This is however, another favorite of mine, just because it makes so much sense. This is your budget banger for when you want something crispy-clean and delicious, when you don't feel like spending more money for something just as good as this, you get this. It's a natural fit. Really lovely and calm nose, there's a little touch in the back, but mostly it's just clean and pretty, classic apple and lemon with some white flowers. The palate is absolutely fantastic, it shows restraint in the fruit, they're there but they're letting the terroir speak first, and then it does into a lovely saline finish. This is top notch Champagne, and as Gary consistently proves through our direct-import program, you don't always have to spend a lot to get a lot.

An 'entry level' champagne that feels like anything but 'beginner', and makes you doubt your need to move beyond the entrance - Petiau Grande Reserve. For starters, this wine experiences five years on the lees before bottling, an astoundingly long (and costly!) process for a wine that doesn't even cost $40, but one that shows to me the level of care that Petiau shows when making even their 'entry level' champagne. Clean and bright orchard pear, a hint of savory oceanic fossil-minerality, and tagged with a mile long finish of creamy short crust - Petiau has been my Grower Of The Year so far, and continues to impress with each bottle!

Notes

What a value! This blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir spends five years on the lees before release, and comes from the 1er Crus of Trépail and Vaudemange as well as the grand cru of Ambonnay. This creamy, brioche-filled Champagne has a white gold color and extraordinary elegance for the price. This is a poised, elegant wine with perfect bubbles after its long ageing and a clean, dry finish. -Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer
