Green River Distilling is a heritage brand dating back to 1885 in Owensboro, Kentucky. Founder J.W. McCulloch travelled the world marketing his bourbon, including a stop at the 1900 Paris Exposition, where it took top prizes. But just as Green River bourbon reached an apex of popularity, a devastating fire destroyed the production facility and all his inventory. And then Prohibition was declared. McCulloch died before he could restore his brand to its former glory. Over the ensuing decades, the distillery changed hands several time, and a couple generations of the Medley family helped run the business. In 2014, Terressentia Corporation purchased the facility, and installed distiller Ron McCall, who worked with Jim Beam, as a consultant. They also hired McCall's son Jacob to manage renovations, but he ended up distilling too. Today Jacob McCall is the Master Distiller, and the company reclaimed the Green River name with the blessing of J.W. MCCulloch's great-grandson. The Green River Wheated Kentucky Straight Bourbon starts with a mash bill that includes a generous 21% wheat, along with 70% corn and 9% malted barley. The distillery's tasting notes say to expect, "Taste: Orange peel, apricot, and cinnamon are balanced by toffee and pastry. A honeyed, round mouthfeel with hints of hazelnut leads to a lasting finish of traditional Kentucky flavor. appearance: Rich, golden-amber color. finish: Lingering, rich mouthfeel."
