2020 Domaine Franck Balthazar "Cuvée Casimir Balthazar" Cornas
94
Vinous
Review Date: 12/2022Shimmering ruby. Smoke- and mineral-accented cherry and black raspberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of botanical herbs, violet, smoked meat and cracked pepper. Lithe and gently chewy in texture, offering appealingly sweet, spice-tinged dark berry, kirsch and floral pastille flavors that are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. The spice carries through an impressively long, penetrating finish that shows fine clarity and slowly emerging tannins. (JR)

Notes
Named for Franck's grandfather and the founder of the domaine, the Cuvée Casimir Balthazar is a blend of young plantings the Légre lieu-dit and older plantings in Les Mazards. John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "(600-litre cask) dark red colour; fresh wild strawberries with sweet appeal show on the nose, which is a touch herbal from the stems. The attack is supple, holds juicy red berry fruit, refined and mild tannins, clusters on a sweet, quiet finale, isn’t especially filled, doesn’t have the structure of 2019. It’s round, aromatic, rather delicate." (07/2021)
