Austere, mineral nose with lots of wet stone, quince and a discreet expression of lemon pastry and fine lees that extend to the rich, flavorful and buttery palate. A full-bodied palate carries it with fresh, medium acidity and a long, creamy finish. A hint of pomelo skins. Viura, Malvasia and some Garnacha Blanca. Very serious.

Roda have been working on a white wine since the 2016 vintage, but this is the bodega's first commercial release. Combining Viura with lesser amounts of Malvasía de Rioja and Garnacha Blanca, fermented in 50% new barrels and vats, it's peachy and ripe, with subtle wood and notes of pear and beeswax and a chalky, yellow apple finish. 2023-30

The imminent arrival of RODA's first ever white was something of an open secret. I have tasted it twice in the last nine months, and it impresses with its mineral, citrus freshness and old vine intensity. Not easy for an established red wine producer to release a white, but they should be pleased. Look out for it when it appears later in 2022. (SJE)

Notes

The first ever white wine from this iconic Rioja producer is mostly Viura with a little Malvasia, and Garnacha Blanca. It is fermented French oak vats and then aged in large barrels for 18 months before aging for an additional 18 months in bottle before it was released. Full bodied and elegant, the oak is subtle and framing. With ripe stone fruit and citrus on the nose, a rich palate and mineral driven finish. This is an incredibly elevated white Rioja.
