Beautiful blue fruits, tobacco, damp earth, and floral notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Branaire-Ducru. It's medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, has silky tannins, and shows the quality of the vintage perfectly. A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades or more. It reminds me of the 2009.

This is a richly perfumed wine that has bold tannins and dense black fruits. There is a fine line of juicy acidity cutting through all the richness to lend freshness against all the concentration. This is for long-term aging. (RV)

Nuanced and complex on the nose, this smells rich and full of life. Juicy from the start with a brightness to the fruit. Harmonious with round, slightly chewy generous tannins. Has real aromatic interest, a lovely freshness and then a cooling effect on the finish. Well packaged and shiny. Glamour but also depth, precision and definite approachability. (GH)

Very clear fruit character of blackcurrants, orange peel and spices. Some walnut, too. It’s full-bodied with integrated, polished tannins and shows finesse and focus. Love the focused fruit at the end of this. Strength with finesse. Give it four to five years of bottle age. Try after 2024.

Branaire has long been a favorite of ours, consistently overdelivering for its modest price, aging beautifully, and maximizing the potential of its enviable terroir in the heart of St-Julien. In recent years, François-Xavier Maroteaux has taken it to another level—excelling not only in great vintages like 2019 but also outperforming expectations in more challenging years. Today, we’re lucky to taste one of their finest: the 2019. It captures the warm, open character of the vintage while maintaining the density and structure for long-term aging. The red-fruit core leans into deep, rich tones, accented by hints of cedar, tobacco, and mint. But it’s the focus and texture that steal the show—fine tannins, great concentration of fruit, and remarkable balance, never feeling heavy. A true gem among overachieving Left Bank reds, Branaire-Ducru is a surefire winner in 2019.
