2010 Betz "La Cote Patriarche" Yakima Valley Syrah

Review Date: 06/2013Even better and tasted from bottle, the 2010 La Cote Patriarche is a 100% Syrah, from vines planted in 1986, that’s all from Mike Sauer’s Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. More tannic, concentrated and firm than the 2011, it offers up a mineral-drenched bouquet of black pepper, blackberry, licorice and bloody meat. In need of cellar time, it has brilliant purity of fruit, integrated acidity and masses of tannin that clamp down on the finish. Give bottles another 3-4 years and enjoy over the following decade or more. Drink 2016-2026. (JD)

Good full red-ruby. Pungent aromas of black raspberry, flint and licorice, lifted by an exotic white fruit quality. Very dense and pliant but with a light touch to the flavors of dark berries, tar and smoke lifted by minerals, peach and orange peel. Extremely closed and youthful but balanced from the start. Very elegantly styled and impressively intense wine with exotic high notes that remind me of a top Cote-Rotie. (ST)

This is made from fruit sourced from the oldest block of Syrah in Washington, which was planted in 1986. The nose expresses complex varietal character, with a mix of blue and purple berry, a dusting of earth and accents of cinnamon and incense. Subtle and expressive, this is the best vintage to date for the Patriarche. *Editors' Choice* (PG)

A driven and tight red offering up dark berries, salted licorice and hints of smoked meat. Full-bodied, yet very focused with blackberries, blueberries, cloves and sea salt. Fresh and with tension. Drink or hold.
