Reviewed January 2023This extraordinary Champagne was among the most compelling I have recently tasted. The wine has intense umami aromas of toasted brioche, smoke, dried apricot, flowers, and white truffle. The mousse was creamy, and the texture very dense, yet a vibrant freshness brought all these rich aromas and flavours into balance, and the finish lingered interminably on the palate. The base is 40% Les Chétillons in Le Mesnil from the 2010 vintage, complemented with 60% of wine from a solera built from the best years since 1921 coming from bottles from the cellar that were opened and blended with the Chétillons base to provide an exceptional experience. A singular and positively riveting Champagne, the NV Pierre Péters Heritage is a special cuvée created to celebrate the first vintage made by Rodolphe Péters’ great-grandfather, Camille, in 1921. Rodolphe Péters dug deep into his family’s cellar for this Champagne. Essentially, Heritage is blended from three tiers of wine, more or less in equal proportion. These are: 1) a base of 2010 Chétillons, 2) a blend of Chétillons from 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008, and 3) a blend of the domaine’s Champagnes from 1996 all the way back to 1921, encompassing Chétillons, Special Club and Vintage bottlings, depending on what was available. The older vintages confer tremendous layers of nuance to a Champagne that stands out for its creamy resonance, depth and personality. Exhilarating in its beauty, the Heritage is distinctive and totally unforgettable. (AG)
