2015 A.D. Coutelas Brut Champagne

2015 A.D. Coutelas Brut Champagne

Review Date: 02/2025

This is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from 60 year old vines, all from a remarkable vintage. So, what does all that add up to? A big, rich wine, full of ripe stone fruits, lemon curd, and of course toasty brioche. And then there's the bubbles on this thing...precise, sharp, and seemingly never-ending in the glass. This is a powerful wine that you can enjoy now, if you're in the mood for a big, rich glass (like me), or you can cellar this and see how beautifully it's going to develop over the next several years!

Luxurious, rich Champagne with layers of flavors reminiscent of almond paste, lemon curd, and brioche. Dry and balanced with moderate acidity. It's fresh despite warm vintage and a delight to drink by itself or pair with a range of seafood.

This is a vintage champagne from one of our portfolio's best producers (which you know if you've had the "Cuvee Louis Victor") and from a critically lauded vintage. It is half Chardonnay, half Pinot Noir, entirely from estate owned premier cru vineyards. It has a rich profile of citrus, melon, golden apple, honey and almond, lifted by great minerality and an impressively long, acid-driven finish.

2015 was a warm vintage in Champagne, and some harnessed it well, while others struggled with shut down vines. A.D. Coutelas did an excellent job of harnessing the warmth and producing a welcoming vintage wine that is far from a shame to have open now. Candied citrus meets a classic palate with balanced freshness. If you ever wonder what to pair with curries or other spice driven foods, this is your answer.

Notes

Angelique and Damien (The "A" and "D" of A.D. Coutelas) have 17.5 acres, mostly in Villers sous Chatillon, but also in Ambonny, Bouzy, Vitry-le-François, and Troissy. Their family has been growing since 1809 and started making their own Champagnes in the '20s. The majority of their vines are over 60 years in age, and all the work in the vineyards and cellar is done by hand.
