2018 Mindego Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
96
Vinous
Review Date: 08/2018The 2018 Pinot Noir is magnificent. Rich, deep and powerful, with tremendous resonance, the 2018 is positively stellar. A range of floral and savory notes develop in the glass, adding myriad layers of nuance in a Pinot that marries intensity with translucence. Sweet dark cherry, mint, sage, rose petal and blood orange build into the stunning finish. The 2018 is one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Mindego Ridge. (AG)

Notes
From a small, family-owned estate in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Mindego Ridge sits surrounded by Coastal Redwoods just a few miles from the cold Pacific Ocean. The site is steep, and parcellated ranging from 675-935ft in elevation. The soils are fractured marine shale, an ancient seabed lifted into the mountains by the nearby San Andreas Fault. The vines are meticulously farmed by husband-and-wife team David and Stacey Gollnick. Mindego's estate grown wines are expertly crafted by renowned winemaker Ehren Jordan (Failla) who has long worked with this site and knows the fruit intimately. This stunning expression of Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir will show you exactly why renowned wine critic Antonio Galloni wrote: "What is the most overlooked terroir in California? It’s a question I am asked often. The answer is always the same: The Santa Cruz Mountains. These rugged hillsides just south of San Francisco are home to some of the world’s greatest vineyards and wines."
