Reviewed January 2021The 2018 Pinot Noir Estate Block 8 is rich, sensual and beautifully layered in the glass. A wine of sensuality and texture, the Block 8 is another stellar wine in the Hirsch range. Time in the glass brings out kirsch, cinnamon, cedar, new leather and blood orange nuances that lend an exotic flair. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years, as it needs time to be at its best. The 2018 is positively stellar, even in the early going. The Block 8 Pinot is a blend of five parcels, each vinified separately, done with 30% stems that are not at all evident. (AG)

Hello, beautiful! Talk about a gorgeous Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir that does everything right. The 2018 Pinot Noir Block 8 reveals a lighter ruby hue to go with a wonderful perfume of black raspberries, wild strawberries, dried flowers, savory herbs, and hints of black and white pepper. Reminiscent of a Côtes de Nuits from a cool year yet also sunny vintage, it's medium-bodied and has a seamless texture, silky tannins, and a great finish. This beautiful wine is going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. It's not for the big, opulent, Russian River crowd out there but shines for its elegance and complexity. Shows lots of richness and warmth with dried strawberries, cherries and raspberries. Some chocolate and cedar, too. Full-bodied and layered with lots of fruit and ripe tannins. Flavorful finish. Bigger style. Give it two or three years. Better after 2022.

As well as its principal bottlings, Hirsch produces small lots of parcel selections, one of which is Block 8. The raspberry-scented nose is juicy but imposing and forthright. Full-bodied, rich and suave, this is assertive without being too aggressive. The tannins are ripe, supporting a spicy, complex palate of great length, vigour and drive. (EB)
