Bright berry fruit aromatics lead through to a touch of resin, mint, wild herbs, and boldo. There's a really juicy, lifted acidity that carries the upbeat fruit and herbal tones perfectly. A lovely blend, engaging and different, with a bittersweet finish that will work well with food. *2022 Decanter World Wine Awards*

The 2021 Red Blend Canto Sur is a blend of 50% Carménère, 25% Carignan and 25% País from Maule, made in a cool year. Rich purple in color. The nose presents gentle notes of plum, sour cherry and bay leaf. In the mouth, this is smooth with precise tannins, a fairly juicy flow and a fresh core that stretches out the vibrant, fruity finish. (JH)

J. Bouchon traces its roots back to the late 1800s, when young viticulturist Emile Bouchon left Bordeaux and settled in Chile. Today, the fourth generation—Julio Bouchon and his children—continues the family’s winemaking legacy in the Maule Valley. Committed to sustainability, the winery uses traditional methods such as horse-drawn plowing and dry farming to protect their historic vineyards. The 2021 Canto Sur is comprised of 50% Carmenere, 25% Carignan and 25% País, with some vines over 100 years old. It is aged for four months in concrete tanks, leading to a fresh, juicy and utterly quaffable style of wine. Pomegranate and cranberry notes, framed by dried oregano and tarragon, dominate this wine, along with zippy acidity. Try chilling down this wine a bit before serving. Overall, this is an incredible value for a food-friendly, vibrant young red wine.

Another great bargain wine that needs recognition. If you like wines from the Rhone, you should consider this wine. The nose tends toward a brighter style with Bing cherries, minerals and a floral bouquet. In the mouth, it comes off as a bit more rich with darker red fruits, light spice and a nicely balanced finish that has minerals but, is not mineral-driven. This is a wine that will be suitable for pretty much every meal.

Notes

Bouchon Family Wines began in the late 19th century when young viticulturist Emile Bouchon left Bordeaux, France for Chile. Today, Julio Bouchon and his children carry on their 4th generation family winemaking tradition in the Maule Valley. With their in-depth soil research and innovative winemaking, Bouchon is preserving the historic character of the Maule Valley with distinctive, terroir-driven wines.J. Bouchon’s 2021 Canto Sur is made from 50% Carmenère, 25% País, 25% Carignan, all old vine and all dry farmed in the Maule Valley of Chile. The grapes were hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in concrete tanks to preserve the vibrant, youthful red and black fruit notes.
