I love the Fontaine family’s Criots-Bâtard and the 2021 is an absolute classic in the making. The bouquet is simply stunning, soaring from the glass in a mix of lemon, apple, passion fruit, a beautiful base of chalky soil tones, fresh almond, citrus zest, vanillin oak and a floral topnote redolent of fruit blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and utterly refined, with a great core and mineral undertow, zesty acids, beautiful focus and grip and a long, precise and complex finish of perfect balance. 2031-2075+.

The 2021 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, represented by five barrels this year, has a refined and focused bouquet, just a subtle reduction at play here. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious with a gorgeous smooth texture, gently unfurling with a tender yet concentrated finish. Wonderful. (NM)

(from 3 separate parcels of vines that are now 100 years of age that aggregate .33 ha). Here too there is a faint suggestion of the exotic on the nose of essence of pear, apple, fennel and discreet oak. The relatively broad-shouldered flavors possess a gorgeous mid-palate texture that contrasts moderately with the almost chewy, serious, powerful and explosively long finish. This is impressive and should age accordingly. I would add that chez Fontaine, the Criots is rarely at the level of the Bâtard, let alone the Montrachet, but in 2021 it very much appears to be so.

Notes

95pts Tim Atkin MW: "This was harvested on the first Saturday before most started the following Monday as the rains came in. Céline was intent on getting this in at the right time as she had protected it with candles in 2021. She brought in five barrels as opposed to two in the last brutal frost year of 2016 when she didn't protect Criots. And, wow, the intensity and precision are tantalizing! Minerally and long on flavor with effusive lemon, musk melon and star fruit, this also has flashy, vibrant acidity and a touch of tingly grip on the finish. (CC)." 01/2023
