Reviewed May 2022The fruit is lightly crushed before being slowly pressed and briefly settled prior to fermentation in mostly neutral casks. The result is less lemony than many of the Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey bottlings, and this shows lovely aromas of ripe apricot, hay and beeswax, within a creamy, dense texture that is classic Chassagne. This subsection of Morgeot is on the gentle slopes below Les Grands Clos and Les Petits Clos, where the domaine has just over a half-hectare of vines. (CC)

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot unfurls in the glass with notes of pear, honeycomb, white flowers, freshly baked bread, ripe cantaloupe melon and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's elegantly muscular, with a deep core of fruit, racy acids and a long, chalky finish.
The 2020 vintage is another very promising year for Pierre-Yves Colin, who finds the wines a bit more charming and demonstrative than the more serious, structured 2019s—the latter a vintage we revisited in bottle and which appears to possess considerable aging potential. As readers may know, Colin's bigger cuvées are crushed and see four-hour press cycles, whereas smaller cuvées aren't crushed but see even longer press cycles lasting five or more hours. Vinification and maturation in barrel, with a heavy emphasis on larger-format barrels, follows.

Clear pure pale lemon, without too much in bouquet at the moment. However, this expands extremely well on the palate, white fruit with a saline touch, enough weight of fruit from its Morgeot origins, but these days a better balance than in cooler, more humid times.

Here too the nose is quite firmly reduced and unreadable. There is better mid-palate concentration to the bigger and richer if less mineral-inflected flavors that exhibit focused power on the lengthy finish that exhibits a very odd metallic taste. This may very well clean up but at present, it's atypical.
