Reviewed January 2023The 2021 Romanée-St.-Vivant from Monsieur van Canneyt is simply stunning. The wine
delivers a perfumed aromatic constellation of red and black raspberries, a touch of red plum, Vosne spices, a gorgeous base of soil, duck, woodsmoke and cedary oak. On the palate the wine is precise, full-bodied and reserved in personality today (this and the Richebourg were racked one week prior to my visit), with a beautiful core of fruit, lovely mineral undertow, suave, buried tannins and a long, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. Great wine.

Also racked post reduction. Definitely still shows the reduction though. Definitely a rough-cut diamond at the moment but retains some jewel like qualities. More acidity here and notable persistence. Should come through. Excellent potential at the finish. Reduction arrived after the 2022 harvest apparently, was tasting very well before.

This comes from vines approaching their 110th birthday. It is usually a forward wine, but it
was marked by reduction when I tasted it. That will come around in time. Underneath, the
palate is packed with pretty strawberry and tingly red currant fruit. The palate is lit up by
vivid acidity and surrounded by suave, creamy tannins. (CC)

Though the 2021 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is showing a bit of reduction on the nose, it is clear that this is packed with some very attractive red fruit and floral scents. The palate is quite structured with good density, a solid RSV with a bold, saline finish. It needs a little more flesh to develop but that will be there once in bottle and given sufficient bottle age. Patience required. (NM)
