The 2016 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo from Eduardo Valentini is a beautiful wine that is just starting to hint at its plateau of peak maturity at six years of age. The bouquet is bright, complex and still a hair youthful, jumping from the glass in a mix of tart orange, lemon, salty soil tones, a touch of green olive, wild fennel and a topnote of citrus peel. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a fine core, lovely mineral drive and grip and a long, zesty and beautifully balanced finish. Fine, fine juice.

Pale straw. Sumptuously pungent nose. Broad with a hint of ginger and obvious texture – lots to chew on and quite enough acidity. Very mineral rather than fruity. Noble and utterly Italian. One of those wines that, like a good Aglianico, makes me think of Roman soldiers’ breastplates. Still a great white wine. 17.5/20 points

Notes

"There may have been no greater cult figure in Italian wine than the late Edoardo Valentini, the mysterious producer of Italy’s greatest white, the mythic Valentini Trebbiano d’Abruzzo," declares importer The Rare Wine Co. Valentino replaced existing plantings "with an ancient local clone, Trebbiano d’Abruzzese, convinced it best conveyed the soul of his terroir. And he relied on venerable Roman winemaking methods to express this with startling clarity."
