It’s incredibly perfumed, medium to full-bodied, offering intensely earthy white truffle and pepper notes. The tannins are assertive, lingering on the palate with remarkable persistence. There are also complex layers of black tea, underbrush, and mushrooms. I love the character of this wine—it’s so fresh and energetic and balances power with precision. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from multiple parcels at 550-670 metres in elevation. It’s fermented in stainless steel tanks with 3-4 daily pump-overs and aged for up to 32 months in 100% new French oak. (JC)

Int'l Wine Review

Review Date: 05/2022
The 2018 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is the 40th Anniversary for Dunn and the bottle is marked with a commemorative seal for the occasion. As far as the wine itself, it is another outstanding vintage to add to the long list of sensational releases the Dunn’s have produced over the years, displaying remarkable elegance, purity and a lovely classic character. It slowly begins to unwind in the glass releasing inviting aromas of blackberries and cassis, which are woven together with savory herbs, coffee, wet gravel, pencil shavings and fresh cut florals. The palate is medium to full-bodied and well-structured with polished tannins that firmly wrap its core. It goes on to display outstanding overall precision and balance with a remarkable sense of freshness that continues through the long finish. This is a simply beautiful style of Napa Cabernet that should age brilliantly. That said, the 2018 will require a serious amount of air contact if approaching upon release, however this is ultimately a Cabernet built for the cellar and destined for a marvelous future ahead. Savory aromas of mulberries, mocha, blackcurrants and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with robust yet integrated tannins and balanced acidity, giving notes of ferric earth, dark cherries and cassia bark. Very drying, with a lush, pure drive and texture. Drink or hold.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is elegant, deep and classy. Inky dark purplish fruit, savory herbs, menthol, licorice and spice. The purity of the fruit is remarkable today. There is plenty of youthful Howell Mountain tannin, so readers will have to be patient. Bright floral accents lift the red/purplish berry fruit nicely. This is such an expressive, alluring Cabernet. Loaded with dark berries and black plum, with layers of savory herbs and baking spices, concluding in a very long finish highlighting Howell Mountain’s classic volcanic minerality. With massive power and intensity achieved from their Howell Mountain vines, this wears the 32 months in new French oak extremely well, and it is impressively integrated at this stage. Patience is your best friend here, but this is one impressive wine in its youth!
