This is a fantastic carignan, with crushed berries, rust, wrought iron and Spanish cedar. Cigar box, too. Medium-bodied with firm, polished tannins that are folded into the wine and deliver freshness and precision. Drinkable now, but will age nicely, too.

Drenched in delicious black-fruit flavors, this full-bodied and non-oaky wine made from old vines is also well-balanced and elegant in texture. It offers a seamless blend of black cherries, blackberries and raspberries on light tannins and fresh acidity. (JG)

Stan Buchignani’s grandfather planted the oldest carignane vines on his ranch in 1927; his father followed up with another parcel in the early 1950s. The vines rise up a hillside on the western edge of the Alexander Valley, ripening their fruit to inky purple, with skin tannins that are chewy and thick but not heavy. “If you’re looking for something to go with meat that’s not as heavy as cabernet,” said Aussie wine collector David Hawkins, “this is dry in style, like an Austrian zweigelt.” A day later, the tannins had lightened up, the bright purple wine turning racy.

Antonio Galloni for Vinous: Ridge manages to pull off the impossible, which is to excel in both larger-volume, commercial bottlings while also offering a number of small production, niche wines that will appeal to the nerdiest of wine lovers. The range continues to expand, which makes it a challenge to keep up, but a very fun challenge. 'Over the last few years we have gotten more comfortable with smaller volume wines than in the past,' said John Olney, a Ridge veteran who spent more than twenty years running the Lytton Springs Estate before being promoted to his current role as Head Winemaker and COO. There are a ton of compelling wines in this range beyond the obvious Geyserville, Lytton Springs and Monte Bello." (03/2022)
