The finest wine I've tasted from this estate, the 2019 Château La Gaffelière is pure Saint-Emilion brilliance and offers a complex, intense bouquet of red and black fruits, iron, truffly earth, tobacco, and bouquet garni. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, pure, layered, elegant, yet concentrated 2019 with perfect tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a gorgeous finish. It shows the perfumed, elegant, already accessible style of this great vintage (and I thoroughly enjoyed this bottle), but it's going to evolve gracefully over the coming 30 years or more. Bravo!

The most gorgeous depth and complexity through the palate, with touches of mineral pulsing and salinity on the finish, a ton of brambled blackberry, raspberry puree, tobacco leaf, leather and raspberry leaf fruit. 60% new oak. Brilliant wine. Owned by the Malet-Roquefort family since 1715, with Stephane Derenoncourt consultant since 2004. I love this, and it has delivered on its En Primeur promise.

A vibrant, fragrant red with aromas of blackberries, currants, walnuts and mint chocolate. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Pretty walnut notes on the polished finish. Fantastic length. Driven acidity and focus. Try in 2025.

The 2019 La Gaffelière has a wonderful bouquet of mineral-rich black and red fruit and sous-bois, a little tobacco and pencil box emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe. Perfectly balanced, leading to an almost Left Bank, graphite-tinged finish courtesy of the 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 continues the purple patch of this Saint-Émilion stalwart. No doubt a wine that will give 30 to 40 years of drinking pleasure. (NM)

La Gaffelière is one of Bordeaux's most exciting estates, and its remarkable terroir is shining brighter than ever. Crafted from hillside plots neighboring Ausone, La Gaffelière has demonstrated exceptional mastery in recent vintages—something especially evident in the 2019. What I love about this wine is the brightness and precision they’ve achieved: gorgeous fruit, wonderful finesse, and a striking minerality that takes center stage. The 2019 is beautifully aromatic, with notes of red fruit, florals, and a touch of cedar. On the palate, it offers deep red fruit—plums and cherries—layered with a hint of leather, seamless texture, fine, well-integrated tannins, and a long finish brimming with limestone minerality. While it’s difficult to choose a favorite among their recent releases, this 2019 easily stands near the top, especially given our current retail pricing and impeccable provenance.

Notes

96 points Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "The 2019 La Gaffelière is just as impressive as it was en primeur. Bright and tightly wound, La Gaffelière sizzles with energy. Dark red fruit, mocha, blood orange, mint and dried flowers lend striking aromatic presence. There is some youthful austerity here, but nothing time in bottle won't take care of." (01/2022)
