2020 Penfolds "Bin 28" Shiraz South Australia
94
James Halliday
Review Date: 08/2022Sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley. Matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (16% new). Penfolds' team of winemakers have come up with an improbably fluid wine that has entirely unexpected elements of grace. All the components of fruit, oak, tannins and acidity – the last particularly important – are in synergistic union. No blowing of trumpets here. *Silver* (JH)

The Barossa has the ability to convey a sense of place, dirt and air in the glass. The trick is to not get in the way—a cooper does not terroir make. Despite not being the dominant region in this blend (for specificity: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley), the Barossa makes a potent contribution. Here, in the 2020 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, the concentrated, dry and warm vintage is on show and provides a splay of earthy, dense fruit, stretched over a framework of savory tannin. Despite Penfolds's reputation for big tannins/big oak, the fruit here overpowers both and streams out over the long finish. The heart of Barossa is here. Very good. Will get better. (EL)

Ripe and generous, but the aromatics take this to the next level, with notes of cardamom, paprika and dried rose petal, plus touches of candied violet and cocoa powder, to complement the core of fleshy blackberry, black cherry and cassis. The tannins are dense but velvety, and this finishes with warm chocolaty notes. (MW)

A homage to warmer-region, South Australian shiraz, this has a rich and smooth delivery of ripe blackberries and red-to-dark plums on the nose. The wine has taken its 12 months in American oak (16% new) well and truly in its stride. Plush and suave mouth-feel here, this is effortless and a style that sits right in the Penfolds sweet spot. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley.

Email ThomasThere’s nothing better than when a classic, benchmark wine not only meets your expectations, but surpasses them. This has been the trend for Penfolds Bin 28; a reference-point Australian Shiraz that actually delivers in spades. The 2020 Penfolds Bin 28 is the proof. Still done in Penfolds hallmark style with a prominent oak profile of cedar, clove and baking spice that supports the ripe, concentrated fruit with traces of savory character and graphite. Midnight black, this displays gorgeously concentrated black cherry and sour plum flavors above a tannin profile that is soft and smooth. There is so much going on in this glass, that’s its a joy to drink on its own. An absolute testament to the fact that Penfolds is the most consistently excellent producer in Australia–from the Bin 28 to their Grange. This is a don’t-miss wine.

Email KajPenfolds is certainly one of Australias most venerable wineries with a glorious history few can match. Peter Gago is one of the most decorated and esteemed winemakers globally. Together, they've been fashioning some of the greatest wines each vintage along with producing a supply of exceptional everyday wine. The Bin 28 was originally made from the famed Kalimna Vineyard located in the Barossa Valley. These days, it's a mix of several key vineyards located in the best appellations. If you're drinking Aussie Shiraz then this should be a staple in your collection. It's immensely drinkable offering copious amounts of juicy, dark, ripe berries in a sleek and pleasing format. This is a classic match for richer stews, braises, roasts, and hearty cheeses. There's a lot to like here and it's an amazing value at only $25.

Email IllyaThere is a sea of wine made with the Penfold moniker. Most notably Penfolds Grange and if you are not looking to spend a pretty penny to track down one of these bottles, well! my friends look no further then Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz! This wine certainly surpass for the price. Round and supple. Berries and spice. A great backbone of acidity. Smooth and integrated tannins. That will stand up to any grilled meat you can throw at it. And see I didn't say Barbie once.
