From the ancient vines whose grapes were selected right next to the Spätlese and the Grosses Gewächs at 115° Oechsle, the 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** –42– shows very clear and refined, lemon-fresh and concentrated as well as candied fruit that indicates perfect botrytis. Silky and refined on the palate, this is a lush and savory, very delicate and even frisky Auslese (Beerenauslese would have been the correct name in that year) with concentrated but very delicate fruit structured by crystalline acidity. Sweeter than the Brauneberger, this is the richer (because of more mouthfeel) yet not necessarily finer Auslese. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. (SR)
