2016 Poggiarellino Brunello di Montalcino

2016 Poggiarellino Brunello di Montalcino

James Suckling

Review Date: 11/2020

A firm, chewy Brunello with cherry, walnut and black-truffle character, as well as tile undertones. It’s full-bodied with dark fruit and mahogany and cedar undertones. Tight and wooded at the moment, but should come round with bottle age. Give it time. Try after 2023.

The nose of this wine is bold and saturated, bursting with savory wild cherry, salted plums, mushroom, and leather that seem to say power incarnate, but in a restrained, country gentleman manner. On the palate, the density of the 2015 vintage takes over. It is discreet power: full yet never heavy, it just shows a subtle energy. The flavors show Poggiarellino's trademark Marasca cherry that emerge from a pool of plummy depth. Hints of cola, leather, and wild herbs segue across your tongue, while the wine's central backbone is always apparent. Gentle hints of tannin only emerge in the end. The finish replays much of the Marasca cherry, with subtle earthy spice lingering on for some time. A long life ahead for this wine that will really begin to open in 2025 but is delicious now.

Notes

Exclusively imported in small quantities, the 2016 Poggiarellino Brunello di Montalcino represents one of the most celebrated vintages in recent history. Made from 100% Sangiovese, it delivers intense aromas of ripe cherry, dried herbs, and subtle earthiness. The palate is elegant and structured, with refined tannins and remarkable aging potential. A benchmark wine from a legendary vintage. Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is built around Sangiovese grown in the hills around Montalcino, with mandatory extended aging before release, including time in oak and bottle. The 2016 vintage is widely regarded as one of the strongest recent years for the appellation, with favorable conditions for structure and cellar development.
