So perfumed and fresh with strawberries, red fruit and some roses. Medium-bodied with tension and brightness. Citrus undertones. Fine tannins. Zingy and electric. Firm acidity makes it tight. A new collaboration between winemaker Randall Grahm and Jo Gallo, who owns the vineyards.

The 2020 Grenache, made with 50% whole clusters, is a refreshing, easy-to-drink style. It has a pale ruby-purple color and layered, spicy aromas of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries with hints of autumn leaves, orange peel, aniseed, lilac and lavender. Despite its slender frame of dusty tannins and juicy acidity, it offers notably concentrated flavors, lots of spicy accents and a long, floral finish. Yum! (EB)

Limpid ruby. Assertive red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by exotic spice, incense and smoked meat flourishes. Concentrated and fleshy on the palate, offering alluringly sweet raspberry, kirsch, cinnamon and star anise flavors and suggestions of bitter chocolate and candied flowers. Becomes more energetic with air and finishes very long and gently chewy, with firm tension and subtle tannic grip. 50% whole clusters; raised in a combination of used puncheons and stainless steel tank. Crisp aromas of strawberry, pomegranate, rose petals and sumac are sharp and focused on the nose of this bottling from Randall Grahm, who slightly dried these grapes post-harvest. Sour cherry and alpine strawberry flavors rise on the sip, with fresh flowers and a light hint of dried meat also showing. (MK)

Notes

A new project from Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon fame, The Language of Yes "is not intended to try to slavishly replicate the wines of Southern France, but rather to seek to find and amplify the unique characteristics of our climates and terroirs in the Central Coast of California," the winery explains. "This 100% Grenache was sourced from the Rancho Real vineyard in the cool Santa Maria Valley AVA. Not at all densely tannic, but extremely persistent on the palate. Contradicting all the received wisdom: Grenache is a grape capable of great elegance and complexity (as this wine shows) and one certainly destined to live for many years." Legendary winemaker Grahm shares "an obsession with terroir-driven wines, uncommon varietals, and the Central Coast of California" with Joe C. Gallo, founder of Maze Row Wine Merchant, and they came together for this release as "a collaboration aimed to be a vehicle for Randall's pioneering work."
