2012 Le Brun de Neuville "Grand Vintage" Brut Champagne

2012 Le Brun de Neuville "Grand Vintage" Brut Champagne

K&L Buyer
Review Date: 09/2025

The 2012 Grand Vintage from Le Brun de Neuville shows like a great blanc de blanc and is in fact 97.5% Chardonnay, with just a kiss of 2.5% Pinot Noir in the blend. Now that almost all of these great 2012's are gone from the market, we are so happy to get a reload of one that we thought was among the best! With subtle baguette toast and generous white flowers on the nose and great mid palate concentration, this will make fans of the low yielding, top notch 2012 harvest very happy. The finish is fresh and dry and shows off the incredible chalky minerality of the Sezanne sub region of Champagne.

It is such a treat to taste an exceptional vintage from a fantastic producer! This bottle has had the time to develop a graceful maturity, making for an elegantly layered complexity that is really special. The aromas on the nose and palate have integrated seamlessly and melded together into gentle notes of chestnut and brioche, with a long chalky finish lasting ages after each sip. Outstanding!

This is what I would consider a pretty complete Champagne. It's already passed through the bready stage, taking on a toasted brioche quality and has also taken on a bit of nuttiness from the overall aging of the wine. This is really fun, there's kind of this rounded almond thing on the very finish and the savory elements are outclassing the fruitier elements overall. There's still soft apple and lemon on the nose and palate, but this is more about tertiary flavors at this point, and they're sublime. This is something I want to have with a cheese board. Right now. Please. Super delicious and really compelling.

I can't believe we were able to get our hands on more of this delectable 2012 from champagne collective Le Brun de Neuville! 2012 is one of the top champagne vintages of the 21st century and they are becoming more difficult to find. If you're searching for a superlative aged vintage Champagne, the 2012 "Grand Vintage" Brut Champagne may be for you. The moment you pop the cork on the 2012 Le Brun "Grand Vintage" Brut you can see and smell its age and pedigree. It has a golden amber color with a perlage so fine and racy the bubbles explode out of the glass. You must wait until the mousse settles before you can go in for a whiff, and when you do, sweet, nutty, tart fruit aromas tickle your nose. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, mature sparkling wine of roasted chestnuts, honey, baked apple, dried fig, and toast. Yet, there is an enduring acidity that makes drinking the "Grand Vintage" a smooth and effortless experience. Suddenly it was gone (who, me?)! This is a great example of what a collective like Le Brun de Neuville can achieve in a benchmark year.

This classic 2012 Sézanne Champagne comprises 96% Chardonnay and 4% Pinot Noir, aged over eight years on the lees. Fermented entirely in stainless steel with dosage under 8g/l. The 2012 vintage offers fantastic richness, length, and minerality, with excellent aging potential if you can keep your hands off it! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
