A lovely ferny nose and breezy seaside raciness. Bright yellow fruit on entry, a flicker of preserved lemon and cooked quince adding vibrancy. Then comes the Krug richness which spreads over the palate. The balance hovers tantalisingly between tactile precision and soft warm fruit and the finish reveals layers of cinnamon-tinctured blancmange, and the creaminess goes on. Rich but light on its feet. A definite buy and a keeper. (TH)

This is full-bodied and very rich with lots of dried and fresh lemons with lemon curd and delicate Italian croissant. Fine and flavorful.

The NV Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition, (2014 base vintage) is rich, ample and explosive. Wonderfully fresh and vibrant, the 170 offers an exotic mélange of dried orchard fruit, pear, spice and crushed flowers. Chef de Caves Eric Lebel was not especially excited about 2014 when I saw him a few months after the harvest, as yields in Pinot Noir and Meunier were adversely affected. Perhaps for that reason the 170 contains more reserve wines than most editions. Regardless, the Krug team crafted an absolutely brilliant Grande Cuvée. (AG)

The numbering indicates this is the 170th blending of this Champagne. This iteration has a fine poise—it's mature and toasty on the one hand and offers rich fruit on the other. It is a finely balanced wine that is ripe and full in the mouth. (RV)

I first tasted this with Olivier Krug before it was released in the USA. I loved the wine for its bright style, which is typical of the 2014 releases, but this also had the perfectly clean brioche that Krug is so famous for. The Meyer-lemon-like drive in the mouth was matched by beautiful noisette nuttiness as the wine warmed. I found it spectacularly concentrated without a trace of heaviness, and the finish had excellent acidity to carry the fabulous chalkiness.

The 170th edition of the Krug Grande Cuvée is another triumph for the inimitable house of Krug. Based on the 2014 vintage and including reserve wines going back to the 1998 vintage, this beauty unfurls in the glass revealing layer after layer of complex aromas and flavors. The classic fresh Brioche, hazelnut, white florals, Bosc pear and orange peel grab your immediate attention, with a kaleidoscope of ever-changing flavors and aromas that keep you coming back for more and more. Always rich and flavorful, but light on its feet, this emblematic bottling is one of the best money can buy.

The 170th edition of Krug "Grand Cuvée" is transcendent. The extra reserve wines make this edition particularly special, as it showcases the perfectly harmonious melange of apricot, meyer lemon, honey, hazelnut and toasty smoke. The fruit is so fresh and balanced, but also showing a honed powerful brightness that persists through the long and unforgettable finish. This edition continues Krug's reign as the top producer of prestige cuvées in Champagne.

Notes

The 170th édition is composed of 51% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay, and 11% Meunier and is made from twelve vintages from 1998 through 2014. This is a great release of Grande Cuvée, and has the fabulous combination of freshness from the driven and bright '14 harvest, with the nutty, brioche like depth of the older wines... spanning three decades no less! -Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer
