Organically certified, this address has loosened up a conventional strut of austerity, to a swagger of confidence, textural detail and poise. This new stance is embellished with optimally ripe fruit evincing care, love for the land and authority. From white clay, this is a rich and spicy riesling, reminiscent of great Germanic expressions over the sour Aussie norm. A forcefield of palate-staining intensity. Vinous. Extracted righteously. Honest to place and what that brings, be the alcohol a bit higher. This is juicy, powerful and complex. Compelling length. Quince, lemon oil, apricot pith and tonic.

A very pristine nose with aromas of crushed stones, white pepper, lemons, yellow grapefruit and lightly spiced pastry. The palate has striking acidity that floods in early with plenty of citrus-dominant flavors and then chisels in tight, before launching long into the finish. Like a baseball pitcher’s wind up, it lands right in the strike zone! From organically grown grapes. Drink over the next decade.

A step up in weight and concentration from the Estate Riesling, the single vineyard “Poison Hill” Riesling is a serious example of dry Aussie Riesling – one that can rival the best from the Old World. The density of fruit here is astounding, especially considering how effortlessly nimble it feels on the palate, with a delicate, almost lacy finish. Aromas of Meyer lemon, grapefruit rind, lemongrass and tarragon burst from the glass, followed quickly by notes of apple blossom and beeswax. This is powerfully aromatic wine that is perfectly balanced by mouthwatering, racy acidity that keeps the overall character of the wine fresh and lively. This wine also feels improbably young, and although it is so easy to drink today, there’s a sense that it could age for a decade or more, given the density and high complexity. Simply one of the best values I’ve had from any country so far this year, this wine won’t last long in the stores, so I’d grab it while still avaialble.
A dry, single-vineyard Riesling from Frankland River in Western Australia. Grown on gravelly soils, hand-picked, made bone-dry with no oak, under screwcap. Lots of line and lemon zest, green apple, white flowers, and a wet-stone mineral kick, with bright, zippy acidity that keeps it lively. Family-run, certified organic and biodynamic. Its crisp, dry, citrus-forward style also makes it a great bridge for Sauvignon Blanc drinkers looking to get into Riesling. This could be the wine of the summer!

Notes

Frankland Estate is one of Australia's benchmark cool-climate producers, located in the remote Frankland River subregion of Western Australia's Great Southern. The estate was founded in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam, who believed the region's unique climate and ancient soils could produce world-class wines long before it gained international recognition. Frankland River's inland location provides warm, sunny days tempered by cool nights, creating a long growing season that allows grapes to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Ancient ironstone gravel and gravelly loam soils further contribute to the precision and mineral character that define the region's best wines. Frankland Estate has earned particular acclaim for its Rieslings, which are celebrated for their laser-like acidity, intense citrus and floral aromas, and striking mineral backbone. Rather than emphasizing overt fruitiness, the wines are crafted in a dry, tightly coiled style that rewards patience, developing notes of lime curd, beeswax, and toast with bottle age. Their uncompromising approach to cool-climate Riesling that has established Frankland Estate as one of Australia's most respected producers.
