The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid from Meteor Vineyard is heady and explosive right out of the glass. A rich concoction of raspberry jam, spice, mocha, dried flowers, menthol and licorice blasts out of the glass. Deep, unctuous and full-bodied, the Perseid is just stunning in its beauty. It is also one of Napa Valley's under the radar gems. I don't hear much about the Meteor Cabernets, which is a real shame. The 2018 Perseid is a total stunner. Don't miss it. (AG)

Meteor has been a top Coombsville source since its planting in 1999. Typical of this appellation, Perseid is massively blue and purple on the nose in terms of both flowers and fruit. There is an intense core of graphite that stitches the nose, palate and finish together. Intense and determined throughout, ending on a long, charred, gravely note. (ML)

I was able to taste two wines from Meteor Vineyards, both coming from the Coombsville appellation. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid has a dark, complex, medium to full-bodied, and incredibly floral style that has good freshness in its darker currant fruits as well as chocolate, damp earth, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. It has nicely integrated oak, beautiful purity and elegance, and a great finish. It's a beautiful, elegant red that's very much in the style of the vintage. It's going to keep for two decades. 93+

Another very balanced, pretty Napa red with blackberry, blueberry and lavender aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with firm, round tannins and a flavorful finish. Very pretty already.

This is a very serious, age worthy, pedigreed bottle of Napa Cabernet from and exceptional vineyard site. Meteor is a small vineyard in the heart of Coombsville, just east of the town of Napa, in the valley's coolest region sub-region. This part of the southern valley is often cloaked in morning fog and feels the cooling breezes from San Pablo Bay. The soils at Meteor are all of volcanic origin, some fractured basalts but mostly white, compressed volcanic ash. The soils are very low in organic matter, but the friable nature of the rock allows the roots to delve deep picking up vital water and minerals. The volcanic soils, low yields, and elongated moderate growing season means that Coombsville produces distinctive and powerfully structured wines. The wines at Meteor are made by Bill and Dawnine Dyer (when they're not crafting their own stunning wines from their tiny vineyard on Diamond Mountain). The Dyer's bring an old-school sensibility to the wine striving for varietal typicity, classical structure and restraint. That's not to say this isn't a formidable, concentrated and muscular wine. But, the fruit never seems jammy or highly extracted. The wine's intensity and power is focused and balanced beautifully. Deep black fruit, mulberry, plum, blackcurrant, mingle with leather, manzanita chaparral, crumbly rock, wild sage, and some hints of cigar box and leather. Subtle oak spice adds another dimension without being obnoxious. This wine feels like it's just coming into its own. Clearly a magical bottle of Cabernet from a great vineyard, in a great vintage, that has another 10 years of positive development potential, and probably 20-25 years of great drinking ahead of it. You could spend 3-4 times the money on cult Napa Cab and not find something nearly as impressive as this. A total sleeper wine, put some in the cellar, check in on it every few years, I'm sure it will impress well beyond it's price tag.
